Because the program combines the best in medical and legal professionals, it works. Because it works and has a reputation for success.
We have been able to find forward thinking prosecutors and judges to exchange or mitigate punishment for treatment outcomes.
For example, as early as preliminary charges are filed, our legal medical team intervenes and gets a treatment program started. Among the treatments is a painless, medically and psychiatrically controlled detoxing and alcohol and opioids, followed by a
nonnarcotic medication which will prevent getting high on alcohol or opiates in the future. Because this program recognizes that it is finally possible to prevent drug and alcohol relapse, we are able to reduce if not eliminate incarceration.
Although a person with a substance and a legal problem at the same time, appears to be in the midst of the perfect storm, the happenstance of the arrest creates a perfect opportunity for a long-term perfect result. Many times the legal and the medical dilemma result in a solution for both that would not otherwise be available but for the arrest. The word priceless is totally inadequate to accurately describe the evolution of this program in taking full advantage of the combination of my personal and experiences in education and as a prosecutor. We are proud to say that this office is a solution oriented office in that we are always looking for the fastest, lowest risk acceptable results for our clients. Fastest saves them financial resources because it reduces the work we have to do. Lowest risk takes into account mitigation factors and seeks to provide a guaranteed result rather than catastrophic legal results associated with losing.
